To hold a living creature, to see its loveliness and to breathe in that sweet puppy breath, to feel its heart beat in your hands, to know its trust in you, is to understand the special bond between a puppy and its breeder.

It is awareness of responsibility, combined with a sense on continuity, that marks the difference between the true breeder and a mere "puppy raiser". The breeder is an artist, motivated by a drive to create perfection; the "puppy-raisers" and "dog dealers" are motivated by the desire to make money.... The breeder is the link between the past and the future...

an exerpt from 'How To Evaluate A Breeder' by Peggy Adamson

Travel Light With Your Pet
Lightweight, disposable margarine tubs make perfect pet food containers and double as food and water bowls. and dog biscuits won't get crushed if you put them in a plastic tub.  If your pet is staying with friends whilst you are on holiday make things a little easier for the pet sitter by putting one serving into each container, to be used and discarded as needed,

Keep Animals Out of Your Garden
Scatter old mothballs around the garden and flowerbeds and in potted plants to deter cats, rats, mice and squirrels.  Most animals hate the smell.  Take care to keep mothballs well away from pets and small children as they can be harmful if ingested.

Stop Pet Destruction
If your pet is not respecting your property, whether it be by chewing, tearing or soiling, you may be able to get the message across by leaving several onion slices where the damage has been done.  Neither cats nor dogs are particularly fond of the smell of onion and they should avoid returing to the scene of their crimes.

Restore Leather Leads
You do not need fancy leather cream to take care of a favourite dog lead.  Petroleum jelly does the job just as well.  Apply, rub it in, wipe off the excess and the lead will stay supple and smooth

Soothe Sore Pet Paws
Sometimes your dogs paw pads can get dry and cracked.  Give a little tender loving care to your best friend by rubbing the paws with a little petroleum jelly.

Remove Pet Hair
1.  Slip a rubber flip flop onto your hand and rub carpets and rugs in the direction of the pile.  The pet hair will form a ball that can be vacuumed up.  works well on car seats too.

2.  Pet hair can get a pretty tenacious grip on furniture and clothing.  But a used fabric softener sheet will suck that fur right off the fabric with a couple of swipes.  Just throw the dirty wipe in the bin.

3.  Another idea is to put on a rubber glove and dampen it.  When you rub it against the fabric the pet hair will stick to the glove.  If you are worried about getting the upholstery slightly damp, test the wet glove in an inconspicuous area first.

Repel Fleas in Pet Habitats
If your dog enjoys his kennel or bed, it is likely that fleas do too.  Keep fleas at bay by washing down the interior walls and floors of the kennel with a solution of salt water every few weeks

Say Farewell to Fleas
If you have a flea infestation in the carpet. put a few drops of liquid soap and some water on a plate.  Place the plate on the floor next to a lamp.  Fleas love light - they will jump onto the plate and drown in the soap

Remove Dog Mess From Shoes
Clean dog mess from the bottom of a shoe with the help from a can of WD 40.  Spray some on the affected sole and use an old toothbrush to clean the crevices. Rinse with cold water.

Cure Canine Flatulence
If your dog has been producing a lot of noxious gas lately, the problem may be a lack of the digestive bacteria that prevent gas and diarrhoea.  the active culture in plain yoghurt can help to restore the helpfull bacteria in the gut.  Add 2 teaspoons of yoghurt to the food for small dogs weighing 7-15 kg.  Add 2 tablespoons for large dogs weighing 16-38kg.  Add 3 tablespoons for dogs larger than this.

Deodorise Rugs and Carpets
Freshen up carpets or rugs by lightly sprinkling them with bicarbonate of soda or cornflour, let it settle in for 15 minutes then vacuum up.

Repel Ticks and Other Insects
If you are going for a walk in the woods, smear some chest rub on your legs and trousers before you leave the house.  It will keep ticks from biting and may stop you getting Lyme Disease which is spread by ticks.  Annoying  biting insects like gnats and mosquitoes will look elsewhere for victims if you apply chest rub to your skin before venturing into the countryside as they hate the smell.

Get Rid of Mess in The Garden
If you have a dog or cat, keep an old dustpan by the back door and use it to clean up any messes that are lying around on the lawn.  Every so often scrub it out using a strong disinfectant

Do Away with Dog Odour
If your best friend comes in from the rain bearing his own special wet-dog scent, wipe him down with a used fabric softener sheet and he should smell as fresh as a daisy.

A BREEDER'S TALE

I love my little puppy, he makes my house a home, he always is my best friend, I never feel alone. He makes me smile, he makes me laugh, he fills my heart with love. Did some breeder breed him? Was he sent from heaven above?

I've never been a breeder, or seen life through their eyes. I hold my little puppy, just sit and criticize. I've never know their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind or rain.

I've never waited all night long for puppies to be born, the stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn....
I've never felt the heartache of a little life in my hands, a darling little puppy who weighs just a few grams!!

Should you do this instead of that? Or just pray to God? Alone you fight, and hope one day he'll grow into a dog, bring joy to another being and make a house a home. You know it's all just up to you, you fight this fight alone.

Formula, bottle, heating pads you've got to get this right. Two hourly feeds for this little mite throughout the day and night.
In your heart you know it, you'll surely lose the fight to save this little baby, but God willing, you just might save the little mite....

Day one he's in there fighting. You say a silent prayer. Day two and three he's doing well, with lots of loving care.
Day four and five - he's still alive your hopes soar to the heavens! Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.

You take this little angel and bury him alone, with aching heart and burning tears, (and an exhausted groan),
You ask yourself, Why do this? Why suffer all the pain? But see the joy that puppies bring - it really self explains!

So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed". Think what they sometimes endure to fill another's need
And when you buy a puppy, with dollars and cents you part. You only pay with money...we pay with our hearts
.

Where to Bury A Dog

If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call. Come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well remembered path to  your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them for you shall know something that is hidden from them and which is well worth the knowing. The one best place then to bury a dog, is in the HEART of his master.  ~author unknown~
